Rant #1 - My Thoughts on Pop Punk
Now before I start, I’m going to try and keep this short and sweet and I just want to let everyone know that it’s not my intention to offend anyone, this is just my opinion. I’m not claiming my taste in music is better than yours, you mightn’t like my bands and be overly content with the stuff you listen to, and that’s fine. I listen to heaps of pop-punk artists aswell, I’d just love to know what everyone thinks on this matter.
Okay, so I’m sure most of you have heard the term, pop punks not dead. well… here are my thoughts. there are countless bands these days claiming the pop-punk title, but, in my opinion, the only thing killing pop punk are those trying to keep it alive. don’t get me wrong, there are obviously bands who stand out in the genre, local and international, many of whom i am a fan or am friends with and i quite enjoy.
but the main reason I feel pop punk has to “be defended” is the fact that 7 out of 10 bands are just carbon copies of the last, lacking creativity OR the balls to try something new and out of their comfort zone. Once again, I’m not saying I’m superior to ANYONE in any way, but even the best of them moved on and have grown.
Paramore have become one of the most influential groups in the world for female fronted bands, growing musically and lyrically album to album, Brand New Eyes highlighting the maturity of the once pop-punkers, with The Only Exception having mainstream success though straying from their pop punkish roots.
Four Year Strong is another band who have matured over the years, starting as your average dime-a-dozen pop punk band, continuing on to help pioneer a sub-genre i will call popcore for this example, and now, trying there luck with some straight up rock. Whether you like it or not, they have changed with the times, remaining relevant with their fans and the scene. i’m not saying they are sell outs, im saying they know the formula to remain popular whilst still musically interesting.
But there are so many bands playing practically the same thing as the last, and that’s what’s destroying pop-punk.
no-one wants to go to a local show where you here the same thing for 5 hours. but like i said earlier, that isn’t every band with the pop-punk tag. you know the kind of bands im talking about.
I could go on, but i want to keep this short. Now to my next point. I’m not one who is overly picky with sub-genres. But when someone calls my band pop-punk, it really ticks me off. It’s not cause I hate pop-punk and don’t want to be tied to it in anyway, it’s because its not what we are. We’ve all seen the countless comments calling hardcore/metalcore/whatevercore bands “screamo”, and this is the same kind of thing.
I’ve forgotten my point after getting caught up in all this (lol), just let me know what you think about it all. And just the scene in general. I’m really interested.
once again, don’t be hatin’, just stayin true.
